A ONE MONTH JOURNAL Sept-2004

And now, the journal dedicated to the child singlehandedly responsible for the world's diaper toxicity crisis: Mr. "Where else would you like me to put it?" -Isaiah

Today's Entry: Stand and Deliver - Isaiah stands!

2004-09-01 - 9:03 p.m.

Isaiah stood up on his own tonight. He was sitting in the middle of the kitchen floor when I turned to put a CD in the CD player. Next thing I know I turn around and he's standing - no one around to help him up, no furniture close by - just standing, slightly hunched over with his arms outstretched. He had on that great silly grin of his, then, just as quickly he sat down on his diaper.

From everyone's reaction, he knew he must've done something extraordinary. He waved his hands so wildly he almost fell over. When he's excited about something, his laugh is unique. It's husky and drawn out like a "huhhhhhh, huhhhhhhhh" I think it's a great laugh. Kelsey loves it too but tactlessly calls it his "dying rabbit" laugh. Not a bad new level reached for an 11 month old!

His latest achievement set me thinking. Why do we give standing so much importance? Why do sitting and crawling usually get used in such derogatory terms? We're lazy so we 'sit down on the job.' We are humiliated so we 'come crawling.' But 'standing' now there's a word with power! Soldiers 'stand at attention' (notice they never are asked to 'sit' at attention??) Kerry and Bush are evaluated by their 'stand' on issues -- their progress gauged by their 'standing' in the polls. You've reached a new level of masculine development when you 'stand and take it like a man.' My teachers in med school and college rarely delivered their lectures sitting down. There seems to be something inherently weak about sitting down. We males have a heroic image we keep just under our conscious awareness of what is required of us in times of danger. We see ourselves springing to our feet and 'standing' at the cave entrance fiercely ready to fight. The picture would not have the same power if it showed the men of the tribe crawling to the cave entrance or sitting down, club in hand to face the sabertooth. That's not a very appealing picture. We have to be 'standing' to fight or accomplish anything of significance or lasting value in this life. !

I hope Isaiah's first 'stand' is just the beginning of a heroic journey for the little guy! You go, buddy.
