And now, the journal dedicated to the child singlehandedly responsible for the world's diaper toxicity crisis: Mr. "Where else would you like me to put it?" -Isaiah

Today's Entry: Danny's glucose-laden get-together

2005-03-02 - 8:04 p.m.

They're making steady progress on the game room with at least the windows up and shingles on the roof. The room stays fairly warm now that the wind doesn't whistle through there. The problem now is where to put the dogs and the cats if their garage is no longer available. Here's my nephew Danny who virtually lives here when school is out. Brenda's sister Elsie lives across the field in our guest house, and it's a small matter for Danny to run over and play with his cousins.

Today was Danny's birthday. He'd chosen to have his party at the SIU skateboard park behind the tennis courts next to Lesar Hall, the law school building on campus. Danny's biological dad is Mexican, a fact he is quite proud of. So, we had to have the traditional pinata and sing his birthday song in Spanish. Danny and Elsie lived for two years as missionaries in Bolivia, teaching English in a local gradeschool. Danny came back sounding like a "Camba," the name used to call people from the jungle side of Bolivia.

I lived for ten years in the same general area of the country growing up, so his accent was wonderfully familiar to me. Since they've returned, he's managed to hang on to most of his Spanish, but it is ever so steadily getting rusty.

Well, when the pinata broke, everyone scrambled for the candy, including Isaiah. I don't think anyone really kept track of how much of the candy was finding its way into Isaiah's mouth! By the time we cleaned up and got home, Isaiah was wired. As I'm typing this, I can still hear him in his room talking away, even though I put him to sleep quite a while ago. He hasn't had this much of a sugar rush since his own birthday party in September. He was so wound up, that, even while Brenda was changing his diaper and putting on his pajamas, he started to sing the theme from Kelsey's album of the Phantom of the Opera at the top of his voice - Dah...dah,dah,dah,dah,dah....

I hope we get some sleep tonight!

Doug
