Today's Entry: Who you gonna call?

Kelsey tested for her black belt in Tae Kwon Do tonight with Master Black. She has been practicing with tremendous intensity over the course of the last 2-3 weeks and had the usual jitters and insecurities of not being ready enough. She is such a perfectionist, I knew she would blow it out of the water! She broke the board with a spinning heel kick to end the testing. All our family showed up to cheer her on (14 in all). Here she is with her co-tester Cammie, who was going for her first dan as a black belt.

I was so proud of her. She performed her moves with confidence and grace. I personally don't think she had anything to worry about! She was great. When she was younger, I use to worry about her applying herself to her tasks. She is so talented she can get away performing up front or singing without too much preparation. But the end result was never quite what it could've been if she had practiced long and hard. When rare exceptions now, she takes her responsibilities seriously. She's certainly not a kid anymore. No doubt of that.

Here's her last kick. I didn't manage to get the board breaking, but it was dramatic anyway. I've come to respect Master Black deeply. He is one of the most remarkably gentle but demanding teachers I've seen in action. He has a heart for kids. During the Olympics, he paid for several of his students to go to Greece out of his own pocket. Amazing commitment to making a difference in the lives of kids. Great guy too.
